Course Overview: Fatigue is a leading cause of motor vehicle incidents (MVI) – right up there with distractions, speed, and impairment. The Council of Motor Transport Administrators reports that 20% of fatal collisions involve driver fatigue. Fatigue is a factor in up to one third of single-vehicle crashes in rural areas. The Canadian Trucking Association reports that 30 to 40% of crashes in the heavy truck industry in North America are related to fatigue. A 2007 survey found that about 60% of Canadian drivers admitted that they occasionally drove while fatigued and 15% admitted that they had fallen asleep while driving during the past year.
This course is designed to help drivers recognize the value of adequate sleep and its impact on driver fatigue. Specifically, it covers the warning signs, causes, and effects of fatigue, as well as strategies and tips learners can use to avoid fatigued driving.
A mark of 80% must be achieved on the final exam to receive a certificate of completion. Certificate will be available for download and printing.
